When most people think of exchange, they think of crossing oceans and international borders which may be thousands of miles from home. Thinking globally, however, may begin a bit closer to home through the National Student Exchange (NSE).

NSE was founded as a parallel to study abroad programs, recognizing that often language, cost, and program compatibility make studying in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands more practical and beneficial for some students than studying abroad.

Through NSE, you can study for up to one calendar year at another location and pay UA tuition!  With nearly 200 colleges and universities from which to choose, you should be able to find a university with just the right combination of courses, facilities, and environment to meet your academic and personal needs and interests.

Academics

With classes on nearly 200 campuses across the U.S. and Canada, students should be able to find a university with just the right combination of courses, facilities, and environment to meet their academic and personal needs and interests. The options are almost endless! Students choose classes that complement or supplement their majors at the University of Arizona, or simply help them experience a different part of the country and a different campus for a semester or a year. A listing of all undergraduate majors that are offered by, and open to, NSE students is available at NSE’s Official Website.

Location

The National Student Exchange provides University of Arizona students with the opportunity to study at nearly 200 campuses in Canada and across the U.S., including: Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A listing of all of available colleges and universities is available at NSE’s Official Website.

Housing Information

On-campus housing is available at most NSE campuses, and some NSE members may require or strongly encourage students to reside in on-campus facilities. Some campuses will provide assistance in recommending off-campus housing, particularly on those campuses where there are no on-campus residence facilities.

Language Proficiency

With the exception of a few programs, the language of instruction at most NSE locations is English.

The language of instruction at all NSE campuses in Puerto Rico is Spanish. Students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions, do written work, and take examinations in Spanish. If you are planning to exchange to Puerto Rico, you must demonstrate Spanish language proficiency as part of your home institution’s application process.

Transportation

Students make their own travel arrangements to and from their chosen program.

Costs and Fees

Students pay normal University of Arizona tuition PLUS the following 2 fees, which are charged to your Bursar's account when you apply:

  • $125 Application Fee
  • $295 Program Fee

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Unlike many exchange programs, private, state-based or institutional-based grants, scholarships, tuition waivers, and federally-funded financial aid do apply!
